Commerce Secretary Lutnick: US GDP Statistics To Be Published On Blockchain
Aug 27, 2025 5:20 AM

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Tuesday said the Department of Commerce will begin publishing its statistics on the blockchain, including gross domestic product (GDP).

What Happened: Speaking at the White House cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump and other officials, the Commerce Secretary tied the decision directly to the administration's embrace of digital assets.

"Department of Commerce is going to start issuing its statistics on the blockchain because you are the crypto president and we are going to put out GDP on the blockchain so people can use the blockchain for data distribution and then we're going to make that available to the entire government so all of you can do it. We're just ironing out all the details so we can do it," Lutnick said.

Why It Matters: His remarks came after outlining a series of trade, industrial, and financial measures, including agreements with Japan, Korea, and the European Union, as well as clawbacks of funds previously awarded under the prior administration.

Lutnick noted that tariffs, semiconductor repatriation, and enforcement actions were part of the administration's broader economic agenda.

The blockchain announcement was presented as one of two additional initiatives, alongside efforts to renegotiate ownership of patents created with public funding.

Lutnick said universities had long benefited from taxpayer money to develop research but retained patent rights, adding, "So we are going to make a deal with them all, which is if we give them the money, don't you think it's fair that the United States of America and the taxpayers who funded it get a piece of that?"

The Commerce Secretary emphasized his enthusiasm for the new initiatives and his role in the administration's policy execution. "We're just ironing out all the details so we can do it," Lutnick said, referring specifically to publishing GDP on blockchain.

The Indian Air Force Saturday carried out a mega exercise here involving around 140 fighter jets and attack helicopters, in a firepower demonstration close to the border with Pakistan that came two days after the Pulwama attack. As India's military establishment mulls options to avenge the strike by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group, Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa said the IAF was prepared to deliver "appropriate response" as assigned by India's political leadership. "I wish to assure the nation of the IAF's capability and commitment in meeting national security challenges and defending the sovereignty of our country," he said. Top IAF sources said though the Vayu Shakti was planned in advance, the drill was a demonstration of the force's capability to hit targets with "pinpoint accuracy" and carry out missions at short notice. 40 CRPF personnel were killed in a suicide attack in Kashmir's Pulwama district by Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said security forces have been given full freedom to retaliate against the attack. India has also said it will ensure "complete isolation" of Pakistan internationally for its support to terror groups. In the Vayu Shakti exercise, the IAF showcased firepower capability of indigenously-developed platforms like Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and efficacy of Akash surface-to-air missile and Astra air-to-air missile. Fighter jets and helicopters hit targets during day and night. It was for the first time, the ALH and the Akash were deployed in a military exercise. The IAF also deployed the upgraded MiG-29 fighter jet in an air-to-ground role during the exercise. A total of 137 aircraft including Su-30s, Mirage 2000s, Jaguars, Mig-21 Bison, Mig-27, Mig-29, IL78, Hercules, AN-32 aircraft participated. (Source: PTI) Image Source: AP/Reuters

Indo-Pak: Faltering trade relations between traditional foes
Feb 18, 2019
In the aftermath of the dastardly terror attacks that killed over 40 CPRF personnel, the government on Saturday took the unprecedented step of slapping a 200 percent import duty on all goods originating or exported from Pakistan. The development came a day after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced that India will withdraw the 'Most Favoured Nation' status accorded to Pakistan with immediate effect in the aftermath of the terror attack. While India imports goods worth around $400 million from Pakistan, its exports stand at around $1.5 billion. In 2012, both countries had vowed to normalise trade relations by initiating talks on Kashmir and other issues. These pictures, from 2004 till 2017, are a testimony to trade relations between the two arch-rivals in the wake of border disputes and internal skirmishes.
