Cyclone Fani to cause "extensive" damage in Odisha, says IMD

Cyclone Fani, which has intensified into a "very severe cyclonic storm", is expected to cause "extensive" damage in Odisha, said Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD said that the cyclone has picked its pace and is moving with higher speed since morning.

While the cyclone is expected to make landfall in Odisha on Friday, rainfall has already been reported in most parts of the state as well as Andhra Pradesh.

According to the IMD, the wind is expected to be "extremely heavy" for at least six hours on Friday.

Uprooting of trees, electric, and telephone poles; damage to standing crop; impact on train services, as well as disruption to road and air traffic is expected due to the cyclone, it added.

Meanwhile IndiGo said that it was cancelling all its flights to and from Bhubaneswar Airport for May 3 due to the cyclone.
