Income tax return filing deadline extended to August 31

In a last minute decision, the government has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) to August 31.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing of Income Tax Returns to August 31, 2018, for categories of taxpayers who were to file their returns by July 31.

Upon consideration of the matter, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the ‘Due Date’ for filing of Income Tax Returns from 31st July, 2018 to 31st August, 2018 in respect of the said categories of taxpayers.

“Today our collection efficiency has improved between 80 percent and 85 percent,” said CVR Rajendran, MD and CEO of CSB Bank in an interview with CNBC-TV18. “Out of our books, Rs 2,000 crore is the amount, which was availed to the moratorium, that is the total outstanding in the moratorium availed accounts. The government on Monday said central public sector enterprises have cleared payments to the tune of Rs 13,400 crore owed to micro, small and medium enterprises in the last five months and Rs 3,700 crore was paid to the units in September alone. The micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) Ministry this month has written to the top management of over 2,800 corporates by name to make payment of pending dues of MSMEs, an official statement said.
