India is likely to impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth over $ 10 billion, reported Mint on Wednesday.

The development comes after the Trump administration decided to scrap preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry of exports worth $5.6 billion to the US.

“We are weighing all our options. The retaliatory tariffs may kick in either after the current deadline ends or before that. We are reserving our right to drag the US to the WTO (World Trade Organization) as the GSP (generalized system of preferences) withdrawal violates the principle of non-discrimination," an Indian commerce ministry official was quoted as saying in the report.

According to the report, India last year decided to levy higher tariffs on certain products imported from the US after Washington raised customs duties on products such as steel.

However, the report added, the decision to impose duties on products such as apple was later frozen after negotiations began between the two sides regarding a trade package.

As per the report, around 1900 Indian products were allowed duty-free entry into the US under the program.
