India-China updates: Border remains tense as both countries deploy additional troops
Jun 26, 2020 6:34 AM

The Indian Army continues to be cautious and is actively matching Chinese deployments at the LAC, according to sources in the know. Sources went on to say that China's intentions on the ground don’t seem to match their statements on de-escalation & disengagement, adding that China has violated the LAC in Galwan and Pangong Tso, a clear departure from previously accepted positions.

People in the know have told CNBC-TV18 that Chinese tents in Galwan that had been demolished on June 15 have since reappeared and there is a significant increase in Chinese construction activity there.

There has been no departure from existing positions at Depsang, however, Chinese troops are deployed in large numbers across the LAC, say sources.

No fresh clashes have been reported since June 15. The next round of military talks between the two nations is to be held soon to resolve the border face-off.

Meanwhile, imports from China are stuck in various ports in the country. Importers, whose consignments have been held up at ports and container freight stations across the country are a worried lot. It has been five days since the consignments were held for examination, but the process has not yet begun, sources told CNBC-TV18. Read more.

As the call for serving ties with China grow louder and New Delhi nudging firms to find ways to cut imports, two big industries, automobiles and pharmaceuticals, say this is easier said than done. Read more.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is reviewing its global deployment of forces to ensure it is postured appropriately to counter the People's Liberation Army, given the increasing threat posed by China to countries like India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines in Asia, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday. The US Senate also passed legislation on Thursday that would impose mandatory sanctions on people or companies that back efforts by China to restrict Hong Kong's autonomy, pushing back against Beijing's new security law for the city. Read more.

Meanwhile, in an interview with PTI, Indian envoy to China Vikram Misri said that China's claim of sovereignty over Galwan is completely "untenable". Such exaggerated claims are not going to help, he averred. "China's attempt to alter status quo on ground can have 'ripples and repercussions' in broader bilateral relationship, Misri said.

Maintaining peace and tranquility on the border is sine qua non for progress in the rest of bilateral relationship, the Indian envoy said. Actions taken by Chinese forces on the ground have damaged considerable trust in bilateral relationship. China should stop creating obstructions and hindrances in normal patrolling of Indian troops, Misri told PTI.

He lamented that India has always carried activities on the Indian side of the LAC. “China has to stop the practice of transgressing and trying to erect structures on the Indian side of the LAC. India hopes China will realise its responsibility in de-escalation and disengaging by moving back to its side of LAC,” Misri highlighted. Read more.
