FSSAI will regulate offline and online retailers, importers and manufacturers to ensure that such substances are not present in food, beverages and nutritional supplements sold.

In the guidelines accessed by the paper, the food regulator has also specified what the sportspersons should not consume to avoid possible doping.

The regulator outlined requirements for manufacturers, retailers and importers. The sellers will be required to have a license issued by the regulator, label and claims, authenticity, traceability and date marking. The FMCG firms are required to comply with the methods issued by Canada-headquartered World Anti Doping Agency (Wada) which is revised every year.

The move comes after Wada's doping violation report for 2015. In the report, India ranked third after the Russian Federation and Italy.

After 117 Indian athletes failed to clear dope tests in 2015, the regulator drafted the norms based on the National Anti-Doping Agency's (Nada) suggestions. FSSAI signed a five-year agreement last year with Nada to develop capacities at its laboratories to test for the presence of doping substances in food and nutritional supplements.
