India's successful 'kill' with an ASAT weapon is significant, says security expert Brahma Chellaney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India had shot down a satellite in space on Wednesday with an anti-satellite missile (ASAT). Brahma Chellaney, a security expert at Centre of Policy Research, analyzed the announcement.

"Developing ASAT would act as a deterrent for any enemy attacks in future," Chellaney said, adding that developing anti-satellite weapon was very crucial for India’s defence.

According to him, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sought permission years ago from the government to display anti-satellite weapons.

“India has demonstrated its space capabilities both in the civilian sphere by sending a mission to the Mars successfully and also in the military sphere and this anti-satellite kill is a demonstration of India’s military relevant space capability,” he added.

08:25 AM EDT, 08/01/2025 (MT Newswires) -- A rate reduction at this week's Federal Open Market Committee meeting would have been insurance against a further weakening in the US economy, Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman said in a statement Friday explaining her dissent at the meeting, when she preferred a 25-basis point rate reduction.
