Indra Nooyi on life after PepsiCo: "Take a vacation, watch the New York Yankees baseball team"

It's not easy to imagine living a normal life after leading a Fortune 500 company for 12 years but that's a change Indra Nooyi will soon live with.

Nooyi, 62, will step down as CEO of food and beverage giant PepsiCo in October but remain chairman until early 2019.

She oversaw PepsiCo during a turbulent time in the industry that has forced food giants including Coca-Cola, Campbell Soup Co. and Oreo maker Mondelez International Inc to adapt to changing tastes. All those companies changed CEOs in roughly the last year.

As she ponders her next chapter, Nooyi said in an interview to AdAge India that she'll possibly take a vacation, in addition to watching the New York Yankees baseball team, and, she quipped, "listen to some music, take a walk in the woods."

Nooyi, who was born in India, grew up in a middle class family. When she and her sister were young, their mother challenged them at the dinner table each night to give speeches about what they would do if they were prime minister or another world leader, a Pepsi spokesperson said. After the speeches, their mother would vote.

Her departure leaves only 24 women leading Fortune 500 companies, after Beth Ford became the CEO of Land O'Lakes just last week.
