July Unemployment Rate Gains Largest in Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, South Carolina

10:10 AM EDT, 08/16/2024 (MT Newswires) -- State-level data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Friday showed the unemployment rate rose in 13 states in July, fell in one and held steady elsewhere.

The largest unemployment rate gains were in Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, and South Carolina, where it rose by 0.3 percentage points in each state. Connecticut posted the only decline, where it fell by 0.3 percentage points.

South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate at 2% while District of Columbia had the highest at 5.5%.

The national unemployment rate was reported at 4.3% in July, up from 4.1% in June.

Nonfarm payrolls rose in two states, fell in one and were little changed elsewhere. Nationwide nonfarm payrolls rose by only 114,000 in July after a 179,000 gain in June.

The largest payrolls gain in absolute terms was in New York, which added 41,400 jobs, followed by Oregon with 8,500.
