10:27 AM EDT, 06/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- State-level data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Tuesday showed the unemployment rate rose in three states in May, fell in two and held steady elsewhere.
The largest unemployment rate gain was in Massachusetts, where it rose by 0.2 percentage point. South Dakota had the lowest rate at 1.8%, while Washington DC had the highest rate at 5.9%.
The national unemployment rate was reported at 4.2% in May, unchanged from April.
Nonfarm payrolls was essentially unchanged in all the states and the Washington D.C. Nationwide nonfarm payrolls increased by 139,000 in May after a 147,000 gain in April.
The largest payrolls gain in absolute terms was in Texas, which added 213,300 jobs, followed by Florida with 148,700 jobs.
