The company, on its website, said that considering the present scenario, it was updating its monsoon forecast.

Under the revised forecast, it has predicted that August is likely to end with 88 percent of long period average(LPA), while September is expected to perform "a shade better" and end with an LPA of 93 percent.

“As of now, the oceanic parameters are not at all favourable for enhancing Monsoon rains during the second half of the season. Both the rainiest pockets of Northeast India and West Coast are likely to perform poorer than usual,” said Jatin Singh, managing director of the company.

Here is its monsoon forecast on monthly basis:

August- 88% of LPA (LPA being 261 mm)

70 percent chance of deficit rains

20 percent chance of below normal rains

10 percent chance of normal rains

September-93% of LPA (LPA being 173 mm)

60 percent chance of below normal

20 percent chance of normal

20 percent chance of above normal

Sowing of summer-sown crops such as soybean, cotton, corn and pulses has been delayed in India due to the slow progress of monsoon rains in central and western parts of the country, raising concerns over output.

Earlier in May, Skymet had predicted normal monsoon in 2018, saying that the weather conditions were favourable.
