The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) threatened to call a nationwide strike demanding uniformity of diesel prices across India.
The association has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi listing their demands of the rollback of hike in third party insurance premium calling it "an organised loot," and rationalising the state and central taxes by bringing them under Goods and Services Tax (GST).
AIMTC added that the Transport Ministry has turned a blind eye on their demands, after a meeting with Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) in presence of Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, post which they have decided to go on a strike.
The transport sector is country's lifeline and backbone of the Indian economy. The government has "broken the back" of truckers and transporters, AIMTC said.
The sector is still trying to revive post-demonetisation and the implementation of GST, which had put a halt to the business of transportation.
It has also asked the government to revise the diesel prices on a quarterly basis.
AIMTC governing body will meet on May 17 to take a decision on nationwide strike.
