Mumbai: Ola, Uber drivers to go on strike again from November 17

After 11 days of strike and Uber promising more incentives, cab drivers are ready to go off roads again in Mumbai, if their demands of increase in base fare are not met.

Cab aggregators Ola and Uber drivers are demanding a hike in base fare with the minimum being in the range of Rs 100 and Rs 150 based on the type of car, higher income, and a per-km fare of Rs 18 to Rs 25, among others.

“We had withdrawn the strike after being assured that our demands would be met. However, we now plan to go on strike again, from Saturday. We will also be undertaking a protest rally of Ola-Uber drivers,” said Mahesh Jadhav, an official of the union Marathi Kamgar Sena, was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.

Jadhav told reporters, as per the HT report, that the drivers will go on strike on November 17 for an indefinite period and that a big morcha has been planned from Bharat Mata to Vidhan Bhavan on November 19.

The strike comes despite Uber claiming on Thursday that its fuel price-linked fare mechanism will increase gross earnings of its drivers by Re 1 per km, which on a monthly basis will lead to a net additional earning of up to Rs 2,200 for 8-hours of driving.

Uber also assured its driver partners that their net earnings won't be impacted due to rising fuel prices as it would be rolling out a national fuel price index to ensure that their earnings are correlated with changes in the fuel prices. No such statement has been released by Ola yet.

The incentives came in the backdrop of an 11-day strike, which ended on November 3.

During the 11-day strike, commuters had faced a tough time due to a surge in the taxi fare and long wait period. Commuters faced a minimum wait period of 15 minutes and had to pay at least Rs 300, even for opting to share a cab.
