A 45-year-old watchman died after the compound wall of a housing society collapsed on him following heavy rains in suburban Mulund, police said Tuesday. The incident occurred late night on Monday in Madella Town society in Mulund (west). The watchman, identified as Gambhir Kari Singh, was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead before admission, a police official said. Mumbai has been witnessing incessant rains since Sunday night. In another rain-related incident, a 22-year-old man died after he suffered electric shock in the early hours of Tuesday outside his residence in suburban Vile Parle.

In more woes for airlines, the main runway of the Mumbai airport is likely to remain closed for flight operations till Thursday as it will take more time to remove the SpiceJet plane that was stuck partially on the runway on Monday, according to officials.Heavy rains in the city have already disrupted operations at the airport, with at least 52 flights being cancelled and 55 flights being diverted on Tuesday. A SpiceJet flight from Jaipur carrying 167 passengers and crew overshot the runway after landing amid heavy rains. The aircraft is stuck partially on the runway and the nearby grass area.

At least five under-construction sites out of total 287 inspected by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in the wake of the Kondhwa wall collapse incident are found to be unsafe and labourers staying there have been evacuated to safer areas, officials said Tuesday. The inspection was conducted on June 30 and July 1 after 15 people, mostly construction labourers, were crushed to death in the wall collapse on June 29 following incessant rains. In another incident that occurred on July 1 night, six labourers died and at least two were injured after the wall of an educational institute collapsed on their makeshift shelters

in Ambegaon area.
