NIRF Rankings 2019: India's top 10 educational institutions

SUMMARY

The government on Monday released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2019. The ranking framework instituted in 2016, evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters, including Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR). Here are the top 10 educational institutions in India:

1. IIT Madras: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is ranked as the best educational institute in India. Situated in Chennai, the institute was founded in 1959.

2. Indian Institute of Science: The Bangalore-based institute was ranked first in the university category of NIRF rankings and second overall. IISc was established in 1909. The university has been on top of the NIRF rankings for three consecutive years.

3. IIT Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi was established in 1961. It has also been given the status of Institute of Eminence (IoE) by the government of India, enabling it to get full autonomy and special incentives to project it as a world class university.

4. IIT Bombay: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay was established in 1958. It is known for its flagship 4-year and 5-year programmes for which the entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

5. IIT Kharagpur: The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur was established in 1951. It was the first of the IITs to be established and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India.

6. IIT Kanpur: Established in 1960, the institute was created with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP). (Image" Facebook/IIT Kanpur)

7. Jawaharlal Nehru University: JNU was ranked second in the NIRF university rankings category. The university, located in New Delhi, was established in 1969 by an act of parliament. It continues to be among the top universities in India to offer courses in social sciences.

8. IIT Roorkee: The historic institute was established in 1857 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason. It was formerly called Thomason College of Civil Engineering and was converted to an IIT in 2001.

9. IIT Guwahati: This was the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India. The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the All Assam Students Union and the government of India. 10. Banaras Hindu University: The university, in Varanasi, was established in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya. It is ranked third in the NIRF university category. The university accommodates 30,000 students in campus and is among the largest residential universities in Asia.
