NRC Final Draft: Not submitting legacy data caused the exclusion of 40 lakh people, says report

40 lakh names were missing from the draft list of National Register of Citizens(NRC) due to the "family tree" criterion, according to government officials, reported The Economic Times.

The criterion was introduced to check and confirm the family facts of the people claiming for citizenship in Assam, reported ET on Thursday.

The family tree verification requires the applicants to submit all their legacy data. The officials dismissed the applicants who did not include the family tree and submitted only documents of self, their children and immediate parents, government source told the paper.

The applicants for the NRC were directed to fill a form to provide names of their family tree which included the grandparents, grandchildren etc. The applicants' information was uploaded to a software to verify the forms, the report added.
