03:07 PM EDT, 06/14/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The number of oil rigs in the US fell by four for the week ended June 14, according to data compiled by energy services company Baker Hughes ( BKR ) .
The weekly count for oil dropped to 488 from 492 a week earlier. The tallies for gas and miscellaneous rigs were unchanged at 98 and four, respectively. A year earlier, the US had 552 oil, 130 gas and five miscellaneous rigs in operation, company data showed.
Overall, 590 rigs were operating in the US this week, down from 687 a year earlier. Among US states, top producer Texas lost two rigs to 285, while the counts in Louisiana and Oklahoma fell by two and one, respectively.
Across North America, oil-and-gas equipment advanced by 13 on a weekly basis to 750, compared with 846 at the same point last year. The count in Canada jumped by 17 to 160 rigs, led mainly by oil.
West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.2% at $78.49 per barrel in Friday's afternoon trade.
On Wednesday, government data showed that commercial crude stockpiles in the US increased by 3.7 million barrels to 459.7 million in the week ended June 7. The consensus estimate on Bloomberg was for a draw of 1.5 million barrels.
