03:09 PM EDT, 06/21/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The number of oil rigs in the US dropped by three for the week ended June 21, according to data compiled by energy services company Baker Hughes ( BKR ) .
The weekly count for oil declined to 485 from 488 a week earlier. The tally for gas was unchanged at 98, while miscellaneous rigs rose by one to five. A year earlier, the US had 546 oil, 130 gas and six miscellaneous rigs in operation, company data showed.
Overall, 588 rigs were operating in the US this week, down from 682 a year earlier. Among US states, top producer Texas lost three rigs to 282, while the count in Oklahoma fell by two. North Dakota added two rigs.
Across North America, oil-and-gas equipment rose by four on a weekly basis to 754, compared with 851 at the same point last year. The count in Canada jumped by six to 166 rigs, led mainly by oil.
West Texas Intermediate crude fell 0.9% to $80.59 per barrel in Friday's afternoon trade.
On Thursday, government data showed that commercial crude stockpiles in the US fell 2.5 million barrels to 457.1 million in the week ended June 14. The consensus estimate on Bloomberg was for a draw of 2.8 million.
