Retail price based consumer inflation spiked to a 40-month high of 5.54 percent in November on costlier food items, according to the data released by the statistics office on Thursday, compared to 4.62 percent in the month of October.

During the month, the prices of vegetables spiked to 36 percent from 5.40 percent in September, while for fruits it jumped to 4.08 percent from 0.83 percent.

As per the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the inflation in the food rose to 10.01 percent. This compares with 7.89 percent October and (-) 2.61 per cent in the year ago-month. The previous high of CPI was 6.07 in July 2016.
