Southwest monsoon onset may be delayed by 5 days, says IMD
May 15, 2019 6:33 AM

The onset of the southwest monsoon is likely to be delayed by five days this year, as it is expected to arrive on June 6 over Kerala, according to DS Pai, senior scientist at India Met Department (IMD), Pune.

"Generally, there is no relationship between monsoon onset date over Kerala and quantum of rainfall over the country as a whole. Even if there is a delay of around five days, that can be made up in the subsequent days," Pai said.

Talking about El Nino, he said, "As of now, weak El Nino conditions are prevailing over the equatorial and the temperature in the subsurface, below the surface of the ocean, it's negative, which means that there is a very less chance of El Nino condition to sustain for a long."

"Therefore, we are expecting El Nino’s condition to weak further and become neutral in the latter part of the monsoon season. However, some of the global models are also indicating that weak El Nino conditions to prevail throughout the monsoon season," he added.

According to Pai, region-wise monsoon update will be released later this month.
