Gujarat has emerged as the most-attractive state for startups in India, according to a government release.
The state topped the list that ranked 27 states and three union territories in the country based on overall steps taken by them to promote startups.
In the exercise that was conducted by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Gujarat outperformed others in seven categories including incubation support, and startup policy, among others.
While Gujarat scored 100 percent in overall assessment of startup ecosystem, it was closely followed by Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha and Rajasthan, which scored over 85 percent.
Other states that performed well in the rankings included Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
Chandigarh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim and Tripura ranked as beginners with a score of 25 percent, whereas Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana emerged as leaders in startup ranking by scoring 70-85 percent.
The ranking framework covered seven areas of intervention and 38 action points including policy support, incubation centres, seed funding, angel and venture funding and easier regulations.
The department recogonised over 14,000 startups in the country. Out of this, maximum are from Maharashtra (2,787) followed by Karnataka (2,107), Delhi (1,949), Uttar Pradesh (1,201), Haryana (765) and Gujarat (764).
The development comes after the government launched Startup India Action Plan in January to promote budding entrepreneurs in the country aimed to give incentives such as tax holiday and inspector raj-free regime and capital gains tax exemption.
