The Central Board of Direct Taxation (CBDT) chairman Sushil Chandra has been appointed as the next election commissioner, sources privy to the developments told CNBC-TV18.

With his appointment, the Election Commission has Sunil Arora as the Chief Election Commissioner and Ashok Lavasa and Chandra as fellow commissioners.

Currently, he is serving as the chairman of the CBDT till May 2019. This is his second extension after taking over as the chief of the CBDT, the apex policy-making body of the Income Tax Department, on November 1, 2016.

Chandra, an IIT graduate, is a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre).
