Interim finance minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said the government is aiming to set up one lakh digital villages in the country by introducing more common service centers to provide connectivity to villages.

The government will start three lakh common centers service, which will give employment to over 12 lakh people, said Goyal while presenting the interim Budget.

Earlier, the government had introduced a slew of reforms like digital connectivity for village panchayats, faster deployment of common service Centres in rural areas and lower data tariffs to push its flagship Digital India scheme.

According to Goyal, India is leading the world in mobile data consumption as the cost of data and voice is lowest in the world.

The number of mobile and mobile handset manufacturers are increased from 2 to 268, Goyal added.
