Urban Reality: Air pollution, a national health hazard
Aug 30, 2018 11:19 AM

Each one of us must be feeling the growing frustration of your daily commute.

It's really no secret that this traffic in every Indian city is growing at a break neck speed, and no amount of road infrastructure or flyovers are able to keep pace with it.

The reason lies in plain number as the country took 60 years from 1952 to 2008 for the number of registered vehicles in the country to reach 105 million.

The next 105 million have been added in just six years between 2009 and 2015.

This unprecedented motorisation of the country and the steep increase in toxic health damaging emissions is what the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the New Delhi-based think tank has studied.

Urban Reality decode the Urban Commute Report of CSE with Anumita Roy Chowdhury, executive director, Center for Science and Environment; Ashish Verma, associate professor, transportation systems engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc); Karuna Gopalan, president of foundation for futuristic cities and Prarthana Borah, director-India of Clean Air Asia to find out why this is an urgent wake up call for all of us.
