US Dollar Falls Early Friday Ahead of Daly, Personal Income, Spending, Michigan, Kansas City Services

07:29 AM EST, 12/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar fell against its major trading partners early Friday ahead of busy day of data releases.

San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly is due to appear on Bloomberg TV at 7:30 am ET, the first Fed official to speak after Wednesday's FOMC decision.

Personal income, spending and price data for November are due to be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading for December and state-level employment data for November, both at 10:00 am ET.

Services data for December from the Kansas City Fed is set to be released at 11:00 am ET and the Atlanta and St. Louis Fed banks are due to update their gross domestic product growth Nowcast estimates around midday.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Friday:

EUR/USD rose to 1.0387 from 1.0368 at the Thursday US close but was below a level of 1.0414 at the same time Thursday morning. Eurozone consumer confidence for December is due to be released at 10:00 am ET. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Jan. 30.

GBP/USD rose slightly to 1.2506 from 1.2505 at the Thursday US close but was below a level of 1.2639 at the same time Thursday morning. UK retail sales rose less than expected in November, but core retail sales growth, which excludes autos and fuels, was stronger than expected when the data was released overnight. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Feb. 6.

USD/JPY fell to 156.7658 from 157.3292 at the Thursday US close and 156.9455 at the same time Thursday morning. Japanese consumer price growth was stronger than expected in November, lifting the year-over-year rates for both overall and core prices. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Jan. 23-24.

USD/CAD fell to 1.4386 from 1.4391 at the Thursday US close but was slightly above a level of 1.4384 at the same time Thursday morning. Canadian retail sales for October are due to be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by the Canadian budget balance for October at 11:00 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Jan. 29.
