US Dollar Falls Early Monday, Eyes on GDP, Personal Income, Spending Data

07:31 AM EDT, 06/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar fell against its major trading partners early Monday ahead of an unusually busy week of economic data, with a focus on gross domestic product and personal income and spending data later in the week.

The week starts light with only manufacturing data from the Dallas Federal Reserve on the schedule at 10:30 am ET and an appearance by San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, a voter on the Federal Open Market Committee this year, at 2:00 pm ET.

Tuesday's calendar is full, highlighted by weekly Redbook same store sales, home price data, and consumer confidence. Wednesday's schedule includes new home sales and weekly mortgage applications and petroleum stocks data.

The final reading for Q1 GDP, advance trade data and weekly jobless claims are the highlights for Thursday, followed by personal income, spending and price data, and the University of Michigan's final June consumer sentiment reading Friday.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Monday:

EUR-USD rose to 1.0727 from 1.0693 at the Friday US close and 1.0681 at the same time Friday morning. There are no Eurozone data on Monday's schedule, but European Central Bank policy board member Elizabeth McCaul is scheduled to speak at 10:15 am ET, followed by board member Isabel Schnabel at 11:30 am ET. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for July 18.

GBP-USD rose to 1.2663 from 1.2650 at the Friday US close and 1.2637 at the same time Friday morning. UK manufacturing business expectations improved in June but remained negative, indicating an expectation for lower orders. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Aug. 1.

USD-JPY fell to 159.5120 from 159.5931 at the Friday US close but was above a level of 158.9871 at the same time Friday morning. There were no Japanese data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for July 30-31.

USD-CAD fell to 1.3675 from 1.3696 at the Friday US close and 1.3691 at the same time Friday morning. There are no Canadian data on Monday's schedule, but Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem is set to speak at 1:45 pm ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for July 24.
