US Dollar Falls Early Thursday Ahead of Busy Data Schedule

07:34 AM EDT, 05/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar fell against its major trading partners early Thursday ahead of the release of weekly jobless claims and the Chicago Federal Reserve's national index for April, both at 8:30 am ET.

S&P Global's flash estimates of May manufacturing and services conditions are set to be published at 9:45 am ET, followed by new-home sales for April at 10:00 am ET, weekly natural gas stocks at 10:30 am ET and the Kansas City Fed's manufacturing reading for May at 11:00 am ET.

Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic, a voter on the Federal Open Market Committee this year, is set to speak at 3:00 pm ET.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Thursday:

EUR-USD rose to 1.0845 from 1.0821 at the Wednesday US close and 1.0840 at the same time Wednesday morning. The preliminary Eurozone manufacturing purchasing managers' index rose in May but still indicated contraction while the services PMI held steady above the breakeven point, according to data released earlier Thursday. Eurozone consumer confidence data for May is due to be released at 10:00 am ET. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for June 6.

GBP-USD rose to 1.2730 from 1.2716 at the Wednesday US close and 1.2723 at the same time Wednesday morning. Preliminary UK manufacturing PMI rose back above the breakeven point in May while services PMI slipped but still indicated expansion, data released earlier Thursday showed. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for June 20.

USD-JPY fell to 156.7055 from 156.7195 at the Wednesday US close but was above a level of 156.4703 at the same time Wednesday morning. Preliminary Japanese manufacturing PMI rose in May to now indicate expansion while services PMI declined but remained above the breakeven point, data released overnight showed. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for June 13-14.

USD-CAD fell to 1.3672 from 1.3691 at the Wednesday US close but was above a level of 1.3659 at the same time Wednesday morning. Canadian data on new home prices and vehicle sales are due for released at 8:30 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for June 5.
