US Dollar Falls Early Thursday Ahead of Jobless Claims, GDP, Advance Trade

07:47 AM EDT, 05/30/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar declined against its major trading partners early Thursday ahead of the release of weekly initial jobless claims, the second look at Q1 GDP and advance trade data for April, all at 8:30 am ET.

Pending home sales data for April are set to be released at 10:00 am ET, followed by weekly natural gas stocks at 10:30 am ET and weekly petroleum stocks data at 11:00 am ET.

New York Federal Reserve President John Williams is scheduled to speak at 12:05 pm ET, followed by Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan at 5:00 pm ET.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Thursday:

EUR-USD rose to 1.0816 from 1.0802 at the Wednesday US close but was below a level of 1.0842 at the same time Wednesday morning. Eurozone consumer confidence improved modestly in May but remained in negative territory, while the Eurozone unemployment rate slipped in April. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for June 6.

GBP-USD rose to 1.2715 from 1.2702 at the Wednesday US close but was below a level of 1.2743 at the same time Wednesday morning. There are no UK data on Thursday's calendar, but Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey is set to speak at 2:50 pm ET. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for June 20.

USD-JPY fell to 156.9058 from 157.6880 at the Wednesday US close and 157.2897 at the same time Wednesday morning. There were no Japanese data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for June 13-14.

USD-CAD fell to 1.3713 from 1.3716 at the Wednesday US close but was above a level of 1.3678 at the same time Wednesday morning. Canadian weekly earnings for March and the Q1 current account are set to be released at 8:30 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is set for June 5.
