US Dollar Falls Early Thursday Before Claims, GDP, Durable Goods Orders, Multiple Fed Appearances

07:59 AM EDT, 09/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar fell against its major trading partners early Thursday ahead of a busy day of economic data releases and appearances by eight Federal Reserve officials, including brief remarks from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.

Thursday starts with weekly jobless claims, durable goods orders for August and the final update to Q2 gross domestic product, which will include annual revisions covering the last five years, all at 8:30 am ET.

Fed Governor Adriana Kugler appears with Boston Fed President Susan Collins at 9:10 am ET, followed by a speech by Fed Governor Michelle Bowman at 9:15 am ET.

Powell will deliver opening remarks at 9:20 am ET and New York Fed President John Williams is scheduled to speak at 9:25 am ET.

Pending home sales data for August is due to be released at 10:00 am ET, followed by weekly natural gas stocks at 10:30 am ET. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr is also due to speak at 10:30 am at the same time as Fed Governor Lisa Cook.

The Kansas City Fed's manufacturing reading for September is due at 11:00 am ET.

Barr returns at 1:00 pm in a discussion with Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari and Cook finishes the day with another appearance at 6:00 pm ET.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Thursday:

EUR/USD rose to 1.1147 from 1.1126 at the Wednesday US close but was below a level of 1.1186 at the same time Wednesday morning. Eurozone private sector loan growth accelerated in August, as did business loan growth, data earlier Thursday showed. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde is set to speak at 9:30 am ET, followed by ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos at 10:15 am ET and ECB policy board member Isabel Schnabel at 12:00 pm ET. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Oct. 17.

GBP/USD rose to 1.3377 from 1.3316 at the Wednesday US close and 1.3366 at the same time Wednesday morning. There are no UK data on Thursday's schedule. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7.

USD/JPY fell to 144.5521 from 144.7661 at the Wednesday US close but was above a level of 144.2033 at the same time Wednesday morning. There were no Japanese data released overnight. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Oct. 30-31.

USD/CAD fell to 1.3465 from 1.3485 at the Wednesday US close but was above a level of 1.3439 at the same time Wednesday morning. Canada average weekly earnings and manufacturing sales are due for release at 8:30 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Oct. 23.
