US Dollar Rises Early Wednesday Ahead of Busy Fed Speaker Schedule

07:42 AM EST, 11/12/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The US dollar rose against its major trading partners early Wednesday ahead of a busy day of appearances by Federal Reserve officials.

New York Fed President John Williams is due to speak at 9:20 am ET, followed by Fed Governor Christopher Waller at 10:20 am ET, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic at 12:15 pm ET and Fed Governor Stephen Miran at 12:30 pm ET.

Earlier Wednesday, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported mortgage applications rose slightly in the week ended Nov. 7 despite an increase in average mortgage rates.

On Wednesday afternoon, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill passed by the Senate Tuesday to open the government.

A quick summary of foreign exchange activity heading into Wednesday:

EUR/USD fell to 1.1579 from 1.1584 at the Tuesday US close but was above a level of 1.1573 at the same time Tuesday morning. There are no Eurozone data on Wednesday's schedule, but European Central Bank policy board member Isabel Schnabel said earlier Wednesday she is comfortable with the ECB's policy rate and there is no need to change it other than a major shock. The next European Central Bank meeting is scheduled for Dec. 18.

GBP/USD fell to 1.3126 from 1.3162 at the Tuesday US close and 1.3148 at the same time Tuesday morning. There are no UK data on Tuesday's schedule. The next Bank of England meeting is scheduled for Dec. 18.

USD/JPY rose to 154.7719 from 154.1298 at the Tuesday US close and 154.2118 at the same time Tuesday morning. Japanese business conditions improved in November, according to the monthly Tankan index released overnight, while Japanese machine tool orders surged in October compared with a year earlier. The next Bank of Japan meeting is scheduled for Dec. 18-19.

USD/CAD rose to 1.4012 from 1.4009 at the Tuesday US close but was below a level of 1.4025 at the same time Tuesday morning. Canadian building permits data for September are due to be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by Canadian consumer sentiment data for November at 11:00 am ET. The next Bank of Canada meeting is scheduled for Dec. 10.
