US Equity Indexes Mixed Ahead of Inflation, Monetary Policy Announcements
Jun 11, 2024 10:53 AM

01:40 PM EDT, 06/11/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US equity indexes traded mixed as technology gains helped the Nasdaq Composite grind higher amid an air of caution ahead of the June monetary policy announcement and May's inflation data.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.2% to 17,230.6 after midday on Tuesday. The S&P 500 fell 0.2% to 5,350.2, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.7% to 38,604.5. Both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq hit new record highs on Monday.

All sectors except for technology declined intraday.

Apple ( AAPL ) plans to roll out new features in its latest operating systems this fall. The company said the new features include improvements to its maps, music, wallet, and fitness applications. Its shares jumped 6.2% intraday, the top gainer on the Nasdaq, the S&P 500, and the Dow.

The Federal Open Market Committee's interest-rate-setting meeting will unveil its policy statement on Wednesday shortly after the government releases its May consumer price inflation data. While investors expect the FOMC to extend its policy pause, they will look out for the Summary of Economic Projections to gauge the path ahead for interest rates this year and Chair Jerome Powell's media briefing following the policy announcement.

The two announcements are crucial for investors as strong nonfarm payrolls last Friday pushed out into the year the beginning of the Fed's easing cycle.

The US 10-year yield fell 4.1 basis points to 4.43%, and the two-year rate declined 3.8 basis points to 4.85%.

A $39 billion 10-year auction will reopen at 1 pm E.T. that may "test" Treasury appetite in light of payrolls and Monday's "soft" three-year auction of government bonds that yielded the lowest bid-to-cover ratio since December, according to a note from Scotiabank.

Further, in company news, Tesla (TSLA) Chief Executive Elon Musk said he would ban Apple ( AAPL ) devices at his companies if OpenAI is integrated into Apple's ( AAPL ) operating systems. "That is an unacceptable security violation." Shares of Tesla fell 2.8% intraday, among the worst performers on the Nasdaq.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 0.5% to $78.15 a barrel.

Gold was down less than 0.1% to $2,326 an ounce, while silver slumped 2.1% to $29.25.
