Mumbai records ‘moderate’ AQI of 171 with hazy skies

The air quality in Mumbai remained in the "moderate" category on Friday with many parts of the city witnessing a layer of haze in the morning. As per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) data, the overall air quality index (AQI) of Mumbai stood at 171, reported Indian Express.

Although the skies remained clearer compared to the previous days the residents of Mumbai witnessed hazy skies in many parts on Friday morning.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, on November 3, the recorded AQI in Colaba dropped to the "poor" category with a reading of 212, Malad at 233 and Chakala- Andheri East at 102 with the "moderate" category.

Besides, Bandra Kurla Complex, IITM station recorded an AQI of 134 in the "moderate" category. Similarly the Bandra Kurla Complex, MPCB station recorded an AQI of 167 with a "moderate" category as well. Borivali East IITM and Borivali East MPCB stations have recorded ‘moderate’ AQI of 152 and 102, respectively.

As per the CPCB’s scaling measurements, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered to be ‘good’, 51 to 100 is ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 is ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’, and between 401 to 500 is ‘severe’.

Earlier this week, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) asked a petroleum company, a power company and a few other corporate entities to slow down production by 50% to curb pollution in the city, reported the PTI.

Meanwhile, a Bombay High Court bench headed by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya on Tuesday took the suo motu cognizance on air pollution in and around the city.

The bench asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to respond with steps taken by them to mitigate the issue under existing laws.

Apart from Mumbai, the AQI of Delhi has also been persistently degrading as on Friday the overall air quality index in Delhi dipped to the "hazardous" category. The overall AQI in Delhi stood at 466, as per the data by CPCB. Meanwhile, Mundka has recorded the highest AQI at 498, closely followed by Bawana at 496.
