All educational institutions in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Puducherry districts will be closed today, Wednesday, November 15, due to heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall was observed in various parts of the state on Tuesday, leading to the declaration of school holidays in several districts.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 14.
The weather agency also indicated the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, evolving from an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the South Andaman Sea. This low-pressure area is anticipated to move west-northwestwards and potentially intensify into a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal by November 16.
On Tuesday, school closures were announced in Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Cuddalore districts.
The weather forecast for Tamil Nadu on November 15 includes predictions of heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu districts, as well as in the Puducherry and Karaikal areas.
In Chennai, generally, cloudy conditions are expected, with the possibility of moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in some areas, including heavy spells. The maximum temperature is projected to be 26-27°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to be approximately 23°C.
Coastal Tamil Nadu is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, and thunderstorms with lightning are anticipated in a few places over Interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Over the past few days, numerous districts in Tamil Nadu have experienced substantial rainfall. On November 9, heavy rain led to the shutdown of schools in various districts of Tamil Nadu. The weather forecast indicates the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Andhra Pradesh from November 13 to 15.
Furthermore, isolated periods of intense rainfall are anticipated in Kerala on November 15–16 and Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry on November 14–15. In the coming week, light to moderately widespread rainfall is expected across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
