Heavy rain lashed Bengaluru on Sunday, resulting in a woman in her early twenties drowning after the car she was travelling in with her family got stuck in neck-deep water at the KR Circle underpass.
The fire and emergency services personnel saved the five other members of the family and the driver, with the help of the people who rushed to save the persons trapped in the waterlogged underpass in the heart of the city. The woman, as well as others were taken to St Martha's Hospital in the city, where the doctors declared the former dead.
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah later took stock of the damage the heavy rain caused in the city and also expressed his condolences on the woman's death.
He announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased as well as free treatment for those in the hospital. "The family from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh had hired a car and come to see Bengaluru. Bhanurekha works in Infosys. Due to the downpour, the barricade at the underpass fell down and the driver took the risk of crossing the underpass, which he should not have," Siddaramaiah told reporters.
The heavy rain also resulted in trees being uprooted in several parts of the city.

In Bengaluru's Vidyaranyapura area, an old building collapsed after heavy rains rainfall. No casualties were reported.
Weather update: IMD forecasts wet spells over northwest India this week
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said wet spells are likely over northwest India from May 23 to May 25. It also added that a heat wave is likely occur in southern Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal till May 22.
On Sunday. Najafgarh in Delhi recorded i46.3 degrees Celsius as its highest temperature, while Pitampura and Narela recorded 45 degrees Celsius. Palam on the other hand reported 43.8 degrees Celsius as its maximum temperature and Ayangagar reported 33 degrees Celsius.Meanwhile. trees were uprooted in several areas of Bengaluru after it rained heavily in the city on Sunday.
Meanwhile, tree branches also fell on the Puri-Howrah Vande Bharat Express train during a storm in the Jaipur district of Odisha on Sunday.
