Banking services may be hit on these days as employees announce nationwide strikes
Nov 16, 2023 9:44 AM

The All India Bank Employee Association (AIBEA) has declared a series of nationwide strikes starting from December 4, with subsequent strike dates staggered until January 11. The strikes are set to affect several banks across the country, and include both government and private banks.

The notification, issued by the association, outlines a six-day strike in December, affecting different banks on specific dates:

December 4: Punjab National Bank (PNB), State Bank of India (SBI), and Punjab & Sind Bank.

December 5: Bank of Baroda and Bank of India.

December 6: Canara Bank and Central Bank of India.

December 7: Indian Bank and UCO Bank.

December 8: Union Bank of India and Bank of Maharashtra.

December 11: Private banks will also join the strike.

The demands put forth by the employees include ensuring adequate recruitment of 'award staff' across all banks and halting the outsourcing of permanent jobs in the banking sector.

AIBEA General Secretary C.H. Venkatachalam had pointed out earlier that outsourcing of jobs by some of the banks are putting privacy of customers and their money at risk apart from reduction in recruitment at the lower level.

Some banks are also indulging in violation of the Industrial Disputes (Amendment) Act. Even where the labour authorities have intervened, the management has ignored their advice, violated the provisions of Industrial Disputes Act and forcibly transferred the employees, he said.

The strike is expected to cause disruptions in banking services nationwide. Customers might experience challenges accessing various banking services during this period due to the absence of employees in multiple branches.
