10 things you need to know before the opening bell

SUMMARY

Indian shares are likely to open lower on Monday, tracking weak Asian markets, as poor US jobs data and uncertainty over Brexit weighed on investor sentiment. At 07:17 AM, the SGX Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50's trend in India, was down 0.20 percent at 11,035.50, indicating a mixed start for the Sensex and the Nifty.

1. Asia: MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was little changed from Friday’s three-week low. Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.4 percent in early trade after four consecutive sessions in the red last week.

2. US: The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 22.99 points, or 0.09 percent, to 25,450.24, the S&P 500 lost 5.86 points, or 0.21 percent, to 2,743.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 13.32 points, or 0.18 percent, to 7,408.14. For the week, the Dow and S&P ended down 2.2 percent while the Nasdaq lost 2.5 percent.

3. Markets At Close On Friday: Indian shares fell on Friday, snapping four straight sessions of gains, as recent global data and forecasts deepened concerns about the world economy. The BSE Sensex settled 0.15 percent lower at 36,671.43, but posted a weekly gain of 1.7 percent. NSE's Nifty 50 lost 0.21 percent at 11,035.40 but added 1.6 percent for the week.

4. Crude Oil: US WTI crude oil futures were at $56.26 per barrel at 0016 GMT, down 19 cents, or 0.3 percent, from their last settlement. Brent crude futures were at $65.91 per barrel, down 17 cents, or 0.3 percent.

5. Rupee: The rupee closed at 70.14, down by 14 paise against the dollar on Friday.

6. Dollar: In the currency market, the dollar was softer at 111.12 yen, having peaked at a 2-1/2-month high of 112.135 last Tuesday.

7. FIIs & DIIs: Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,095 crore on a net basis, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 471 crore on March 8.

8. General Election 2019: The Lok Sabha elections will be conducted in seven phases starting from April 11 to May 19, announced the Election Commission. Counting of all phases will be held on May 23. Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Odisha will have Assembly polls along with the Lok Sabha election.

9. Draft E-commerce Policy: The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has decided to extend till March 29 the deadline for seeking comments from stakeholders on the draft national e-commerce policy, an official said.

10. Brexit Deal: Brexitcould be reversed if lawmakers reject the government's exit deal, British foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said on Sunday after two major eurosceptic factions in parliament warned that Prime Minister Theresa May was facing a heavy defeat.
