Alphabet's Google Not Required to Sell Chrome Browser; Barred From Exclusive Contracts, Judge Rules
Sep 2, 2025 2:38 PM

05:17 PM EDT, 09/02/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Alphabet's (GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) does not have to divest its Chrome web browser, but the tech giant will be barred from exclusive contracts related to the distribution of Google Search, Chrome, Google Assistant, and the Gemini app, according to a ruling by US District Judge Amit Mehta for the District of Columbia on Tuesday.

The judge also ruled that Google ( GOOG ) will have to share with "qualified competitors" some "search index and user-interaction data."

The US Justice Department previously urged the judge to require Google ( GOOG ) to share its data with rivals.

Google ( GOOG ) didn't immediately respond to a request for comment by MT Newswires.

Alphabet shares were rising past 7% in after-hours activity.
