07:37 PM EDT, 05/21/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Apple ( AAPL ) asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a lower court ruling that held the company in civil contempt over App Store fees charged on some purchases made outside its payment system, Reuters reported on Thursday.
The dispute stems from Epic Games' 2020 lawsuit challenging Apple's ( AAPL ) control over app distribution and payments on iOS devices. A judge in 2021 ordered Apple ( AAPL ) to allow developers to direct users to alternative payment methods.
Epic later argued Apple ( AAPL ) violated the injunction by imposing a 27% commission on some outside purchases. A judge agreed in 2025, finding Apple ( AAPL ) in contempt.
Apple ( AAPL ) told the Supreme Court the injunction should not apply broadly to millions of developers because Epic was the only plaintiff and the case was not a class action.
