Benchmark indices ended lower on Friday amid volatile trading dragged mainly by banking, auto, and metal indices. The focus during the day shifted to the new cabinet formation with Nirmala Sitharaman becoming the new Finance Minister in the Modi government. Investors also remained cautious ahead of Q4 GDP data due later in the day today. The Sensex settled 118 points lower at 39,714, while the Nifty50 lost 23 points to end at 11,923. In broader markets, Nifty Midcap fell 0.2 percent while Nifty Smallcap tanked over 1.2 percent. Tech Mahindra, TCS, Asian Paints, IOC, and Britannia were among the major gainers on the Nifty50, whereas YES Bank, ITC, Grasim, Zee, and Vedanta led the losses. All sectoral indices, except Nifty IT, ended the day in red. Nifty PSU Banks lost the most, down 1.3 percent followed by Nifty Media (down 1 percent), Nifty Metal (down 0.8 percent), and Nifty Auto (down 0.7 percent). Meanwhile, Nifty IT rose 1 percent during the day.

Domestic sugar consumption is likely to increase by 2-3 percent to around 25.8 million metric tonne (MT) this year and the production would be higher by at least 6.5-7.0 million MT, said rating agency ICRA. It added, “Sugar production in SY2019 is expected to be marginally higher at around 32.5-33.0 million MT when compared to 32.2 million MT in SY2018.
