Indian equity markets ended on a strong footing on Wednesday after a day of volatile trade. The Sensex, Nifty 50 and Nifty Bank ended the day at record high, with the Nifty Bank settling above 28,00 for the first time ever. The Sensex closed 222 points higher, or with gains of 0.6 percent, at 37,887.56, while the Nifty settled at 11,450, rising by 0.53 percent or surging by 60 points. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries rose over 3 percent lifting both indexes in the second half of the trading day and ahead of Jio GigaFiber launch. Lupin, Edelweiss and Mphasis were among top losers.

Shares of Reliance Industries surged nearly 3 percent on the BSE, trading at Rs 1218.15 at 3.18 pm, ahead of the close. The oil-to-telecom conglomerate's stock opened at Rs 1188.40 and touched a liftime high of Rs 1220.55. RIL's market capitalisation stands at Rs 7,72,179.26 crore today.

The Sensex was trading higher by 149 points, or 0.40 percent, to 37,815, while the Nifty 50 advanced by 39 points, or 0.34 percent, to 11,428.55 at 3 pm. Shares of ONGC, Reliance, Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, SBI, Bajaj Group finance twins, Bharti Infratel surged on indexes, while Maruti Suzuki, Vedanta, Bajaj Auto, Infosys, NTPC, Lupin, HPCL, Tech Mahindra, BPCL declined. Nifty Pharma is the biggest laggard among sectoral indices on the NSE, while Nifty Bank, Fin Service, PSU Bank, PVT Bank, FMCG have surged by up to 0.57 percent. Auto is down by 0.34 percent. Midcaps are flat.

The benchmark indexes continue to trade near the day's high with the Sensex aiming 37,900 mark. The Sensex was trading at 37,867.86, higher by 202.06 points, or 0.54 percent. The Nifty 50 too rose by 57.75 points, or 0.51 percent, to 11,447.20. The indexes have mainly gained on the back of banks and Reliance Industries, which hit its lifetime high of Rs 1205, while HDFC Bank also contributed to the gains, rising by up to 0.7 percent. Shares of Minda Corp were trading at Rs 161.25, rising by 2.64 percent, or higher by Rs 4.15 on the BSE at 1.45 pm after the company reported rise in net profit.

The company's June quarter loss after tax widened to Rs 93.74 crore vs loss of 32.71 crore last year. Bombay Dyeing’s quarterly revenue from operations fell 36.2 percent to Rs 397 crore. The BSE Sensex jumped 209 points, or 0.56 percent, to 37,875.20. Intra-day, it has touched a lifetime high of 37,882.34. The Nifty also trades near the day's high at 11,445.90, rising by 56.45, or 0.50 percent. It hit intra-day high of 11,450 today. Reliance Industries rose as much as 1.8 percent to a record and was the top contributor to the NSE Index’s gain. HDFC Bank rose about 1 percent, Kotak Mahindra Bank gained 1.1 percent and State Bank of India climbed 1.5 percent. Among other gainers, Larsen & Toubro Ltd added 1 percent, while Hindustan Unilever Ltd rose 1.1 percent. Among losers, Bombay Dyeing and Mfg Co Ltd fell as much as 5 percent to its lowest since July 30 after the company reported a wider loss for the June quarter.
