The Nifty ended at 10,238, rising by 91 points, or 0.90 percent, while the Sensex jumped 187 points, or 0.55 percent, to close at 34,034. Broader markets outperformed with the Nifty MidCap rising 1.31 percent. The BSE MidCap index also rose nearly a percent. Among index gainers, Bajaj Finance and Bharti Airtel jumped nearly 11 percent. Other gainers included HPCL, IOC, Hindalco, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, HDFC and HUL, rising by up to nearly 7 percent. Top index losers were Yes Bank, Bajaj Auto, both dipped 4.3 percent. Grasim, Dr Reddy's Labs, Adani Ports, Hero MotoCorp, Infosys dipped by up to 2 percent.

Shares of Sterlite Technologies gained 3 percent, as its consolidated net profit for July-September was up 8.8 percent on quarter, in line with analysts' estimates. The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1.31 billion for the September quarter, against Rs 712.3 million in the previous quarter. Revenue from operations for the quarter was up 23.7 percent at Rs 10.84 billion. The company reported strong numbers for the quarter on account of strong underlying growth in domestic markets as well as consolidation of recently acquired Metallurgica, said brokerage firm ICICIDirect Research. Shares of leading non-banking finance companies were up 1-8 percent as investors found their valuation attractive after the sharp fall in recent months, said dealers. "The buying is mainly in the financial companies with least exposure to the realty sector, as investors are still worried about tight liquidity hurting the housing sector," said a bank brokerage dealer. At 1.51 pm, shares of Bajaj Finance were up 7.5 percent at Rs 2,239.10, while Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services was up 5.4 percent, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. up 4.6 percent, Shriram Transport Finance Co. up 2.2 percent, Shriram City Union Finance up 4.1 percent, Manappuram Finance up 1.6 percent.
