The Sensex ended 464 points lower, or 1.33 percent, to 34,315, while the Nifty ended nearly 150 points down, or 1.43 percent, at 10,303.55. Broader markets also declined with the Nifty MidCap down by 1.55 percent and the BSE MidCap slipping 1.10 percent. Among gainers, ITC, Hindustan Unilever, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HPCL, Wipro, Sun Pharma, Vedanta gained by up to 4.15 percent, while Indiabulls Housing Finance, Yes Bank, BPCL, Hero MotoCorp, Tata Motors, Reliance, HDFC, Hero MotoCorp, and Infosys dipped by up to 17.10 percent. Indiabulls dipped 17 percent and Yes Bank more than 6 percent. Nifty IT slumped more than 3 percent, leading among 37 declining sectoral indices, while the Nifty FMCG led the 6 advancing sectors.

Shares of Piramal Enterprises fell nearly 12 percent to a 19-month low of Rs 1,852.65 as investors were concerned about the company's exposure to the cash-hit real estate sector, dealers said. Shares of Hathway Cable and Datacom rose 10 percent to hit their three-month high of Rs 32.35 after Reliance Industries said it will make an open offer to the company's shareholders. Reliance Industries announced on Wednesday that it will buy 51.3 percent stake in the company by investing Rs 29.40 billion. As per SEBI norms, an entity is required to make an open offer to the public shareholders, when its shareholding in a listed company crosses certain thresholds.
