The BSE Sensex ended below the 37,600 mark, closing at 37,585.51, diving 505.13 points, or 1.33 percent, while the NSE Nifty 50 settled at 11,377.75, shedding 137.45 points, or 1.19 percent. All major sectoral indices barring Nifty IT and Realty ended in the red, while HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, consumer, bank and financial stocks dragged indexes lower.

Shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries fell 2.2 percent on Monday after a media report said the US Food and Drug Administration has issued a Form 483 to the company's facility in Mohali, Punjab. The facility was acquired by the company from Ranbaxy Laboratories a few years ago. The Mohali facility is not a significant contributor to the company's revenues from the US, said an analyst. At 3.10 pm, shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were down 2.38 percentto trade at Rs 647.45.
Meanwhile, the Nifty extended losses with the 50-share index trading at 11,386.85, down by 128.35 points, or 1.11 percent, while the Sensex hovered just above 37,000 mark, trading at 37,605.08, tankiong by 485.56 points, or 1.27 percent at 3.10 pm.

Shares of BF Investment ltd rose 12.06 percent to Rs 357.40. The stock opened at Rs 314.60 and has ranged between a high of Rs 358 and a low of Rs 314.30. BF Utilities' shares also jumped 4.36 percent to Rs 321.80, adding Rs 13.45 in value.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals shares traded at Rs 684.85, slipping lower by 1.08 percent on the NSE at 2.22 pm. The scrip opened at Rs 692.20 and touched a high and a low of Rs 705 and Rs 673.80 respectively. CNCBTV18's Ekta Batra reports that the US Food and Drug Administration has started inspection at the pharma company's Baddi facility. The US agency may be conducting product specific inspection at the unit, while there has been no comment from Glenmark with respect to FDA inspection.
Meanwhile, equity indices continue to trade under pressure ahead of the last hour of trade. The NSE Nifty 50 was lower by 106 points, or 0.92 percent, to trade at 11,409. The BSE Sensex slumped nearly 397 points, or 1.04 percent, to trade at 37,693.83.

Shares of HDFC Bank traded at Rs 1,995.95, lower by 1.66 percent on the NSE at 1.25 pm. The stock opened at Rs 2,021.30 and has hit a low of Rs 1,995.05 and a high of Rs 2,022.95. The bank today raised base rate by 20 bps to 9.15 percent effective September 19. Shares of HDFC, the lender's financial services company, also traded sharply negative. HDFC shares were down by 2.44 percent to trade at Rs 1,878.55, losing Rs 46.90 in value. It opened at the day's high of Rs 1,910 and hit a low of Rs 1,873.65.

Shares of IL&FS Engineering and Construction Co. ltd jumped 16.73 percent on Monday to trade at Rs 15.35. Buying in stock picked up after optimism grew over some support from the Life Insurance Corporation of India. The share opened at Rs 13.15 and touched a high of Rs 15.60. Other group company shares too rose. While ITNL surged 6.54 percent to trade at Rs 25.25, IL&FS Investment Managers rose 1.52 percent to trade at Rs 10.
Meanwhile, equity indices recovered mildly after the Indian rupee gained strength against the US dollar. The BSE Sensex dipped 393 points lower, or 1.03 percent, to trade at 37,696.97, while the NSE Nifty50 declined over 103 points, or 0.90 percent, to trade at 11,411.

Midcaps were down by 0.82 percent each. Shares of Bajaj Finance, HDFC, SBI, Titan Company, NTPC slipped between 3 and 2 percent.
