Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty end 0.4% higher, midcaps outperform, Vedanta surges 5%##Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty end 0.4% higher, midcaps outperform, Vedanta surges 5%

The BSE Sensex rose 157 points, or 0.40 percent, to 39,592 at close. The NSE Nifty50 gained 51 points, or 0.43 percent, to 11,847.55. The Nifty MidCap index rose 0.98 percent, while Bank Nifty also gained over a percent. Out of 43 sectors, 34 advanced led by metal, power, utilities and pharma counters. BSE IT was the worst among nine declining sectors. Vedanta, JSW Steel, Power Grid, Sun Pharma and Hindalco were top Nifty gainers, rising between 3 and 5.08 percent. Britannia, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Infosys, IndusInd Bank and Bharti Airtel fell by up to 2.8 percent.
