Defensive Sectors Help Push US Equity Indexes Higher This Week Amid Uncertainty Over Trade Tariffs
May 30, 2025 1:51 PM

04:37 PM EDT, 05/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US equity indexes rose this week, led by gains in defensive sectors of the market after a trade court ruling left the bulk of President Donald Trump's tariffs in flux.

* The S&P 500 closed at 5,911.69 on Friday versus 5,802.82 a week ago. The Nasdaq Composite stood at 19,113.77 compared with 18,737.21, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 42,270.07 versus 41,603.07.

* Real estate, consumer defensive, healthcare, and utility sectors led the pack this week. Among mega-caps, defined as companies with a market capitalization of more than $200 billion, the three biggest gainers were Intuit (INTU), General Electric ( GE ) , and Oracle (ORCL).

* A federal appeals court granted the Trump administration's request to temporarily pause a ruling that struck down a series of tariffs announced by the White House. The US Court of International Trade ruled that President Trump overstepped his authority by imposing duties under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

* Analysts expect the ruling will weaken Washington's position in trade talks, especially with the European Union and China. However, most agreed that the Trump administration has other tools to push through its tariff agenda.

* Trump extended the date on which he may impose 50% tariffs on the European Union. "Tensions between the US and the European Union" cooled as Trump restored the deadline to July 9 from June 1, according to a note from D.A. Davidson. The move followed a "positive call between Trump and EC President von der Leyen," Deutsche Bank said in a note.

* Nvidia ( NVDA ) reported higher fiscal Q1 non-GAAP earnings and sales, boosting sentiment. BofA Securities raised its price target for the chipmaker's shares to $180 from $160. Morgan Stanley said Nvidia ( NVDA ) is "outgrowing" expectations and its competition, even in the middle of supply constraints.
