The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite were down 1.2% each at 37,932.5 and 15,787.5, respectively. The S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 5,060.9. All sectors were declining with energy showing the largest drop at 2.5%.
GE HealthCare Technologies ( GEHC ) , F5 (FFIV), Eli Lilly ( LLY ) and 3M ( MMM ) are among the companies that posted their latest quarterly financial results.
E-commerce giant Amazon ( AMZN ) is scheduled to report results after the closing bell, along with other major names such as Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD ) and Starbucks ( SBUX ) .
The US 10-year yield increased 7.2 basis points to 4.68%, while the two-year rate advanced 6.8 basis points to 5.04%.
The Federal Reserve's monetary policy committee kicked off its two-day meeting, with a decision on its benchmark lending rate expected Wednesday.
Markets are widely expecting policymakers to keep interest rates unchanged at 5.25% to 5.50%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
