Exchange-Traded Funds Decline, US Equities Mixed After Midday

01:09 PM EDT, 05/21/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) rose 0.3%.

US equity indexes traded mixed after gains in Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) shares helped lift the Nasdaq Composite while domestic fiscal jitters weighed over government bond yields.

Energy

IShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) dropped about 0.6% each.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) was up 0.1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were also edging higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) fell 0.1%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) added 0.7%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) fell 0.9%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) declined 2.6%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), rose 3.1%.

Commodities

Crude oil was 0.3% lower, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 0.5%. Natural gas dropped 1.2%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was down 0.1%.

Gold rose 0.7% on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) added 0.4%. Silver was up 1.4%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) gained 1%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was down 0.5%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and the iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) also declined.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) lost 0.5%; VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was down 1.1%, while SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) dipped 1.7%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) fell 1.3%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) also edged lower. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) lost 1.5%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) fell 0.5%. Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were also in the red.

Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE's Nifty 50 are set for a tepid start on Monday amid muted sentiment in global markets and as investors turned their focus to new government’s fiscal support plan and key economic data due to be released this week. Moreover, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it will inject Rs 15,000 crore into the financial system in June through purchase of government bonds in order to support the evolving liquidity situation. In global markets, Asian stocks traded marginally higher but gains were limited by concerns that the China-US trade conflict was fast turning into a technology cold war between the world’s two largest economies. At 7.07 am, the SGX Nifty traded 32.50 points, or 0.27 percent, lower at 11,845, indicated a negative start for the Sensex and the Nifty 50.
