Exchange-Traded Funds Edge Higher, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Tuesday Ahead of Upcoming Economic Reports

08:27 AM EDT, 06/25/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.4% higher in Tuesday's premarket activity, ahead of upcoming economic reports due later in the day.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.4% before the start of regular trading.

The Chicago Fed National Activity Index will be released at 8:30 am ET, followed by Redbook's weekly retail sales report at 8:55 am ET, then April's Case-Shiller Home Price Index and the FHFA House Price Index at 9 am ET.

The Conference Board consumer confidence report, and the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index, both for June, post at 10 am ET.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman, who spoke at 7 am ET, is slated to speak again at 2:15 pm ET. Fed Governor Lisa Cook speaks at noon ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was down by 0.2% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF ( BITO ) was 3.2% higher.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was flat, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) and the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) were inactive. The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) advanced 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

Kaival Brands Innovations Group ( KAVL ) stock traded up 22% pre-bell after the company said late Monday that it closed a $6 million public offering of units.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLK ) gained 0.7%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was up 0.4%, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was up 1.1%. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF ( SOXX ) rose by 1%.

SolarEdge Technologies ( SEDG ) shares fell more than 18% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company announced its plans for a private offering of $300 million in convertible senior notes.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) advanced 0.2%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

Pool's (POOL) shares fell more than 11% before the opening bell after several analysts cut their price targets, following the company's reduced full-year earnings outlook and warnings of lower second-quarter sales.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.1%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) was flat while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF ( IBB ) was up 0.7%.

Novo Nordisk A/S ( NVO ) shares were up 1.7% premarket after the company said that its Wegovy weight loss weekly injectable drug had been approved in China for long-term weight management.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLF ) retreated 0.02%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.2%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.05% lower.

Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK.A, BRK.B) Class A stock was up 1.5% pre-bell Tuesday after Reuters reported late Monday that Berskshire-owned utility PacifiCorp reached a $150 million settlement with 378 plaintiffs over the Slater wildfire in 2020 that destroyed parts of Oregon and northern California.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.2%.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil declined by 0.6% to $81.11 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was 1.6% lower at $2.900 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) lost 0.7%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) fell 1.6%.

Gold futures for August slipped 0.1% to $2,341.40 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures were unchanged at $29.53 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) lost 0.1%, and iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was 0.2% lower.
