Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Monday Ahead of Key Inflation Reports

08:34 AM EDT, 05/13/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.3% higher in Monday's premarket activity, ahead of key inflation reports due later this week.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.1%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

Cleveland Federal Reserve President Loretta Mester is scheduled to speak at 9 am ET.

In premarket action, Bitcoin was up by 2.1% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 3.5% higher.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) was flat. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was up 0.1% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

AC Immune ( ACIU ) shares were up more than 44% premarket after the company agreed with Takeda Pharmaceutical (TAK) to an exclusive, worldwide option and license agreement for AC Immune's ( ACIU ) immunotherapies, including its Alzheimer's disease treatment candidate.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.6%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was flat. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.4%.

Squarespace ( SQSP ) shares rose nearly 13% pre-bell after the company agreed to an all-cash go-private deal with Permira valued at about $6.9 billion.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) was flat and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was inactive, while the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was also inactive.

SMX (SMX) shares gained nearly 6% before the opening bell after the company announced a partnership with Brink's, combining SMX's technology with Brink's logistics expertise to support gold marking, auditing, and storage in Dubai.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.1%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.7%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.1% lower.

Burford Capital ( BUR ) shares were down 1.2% pre-bell Monday after the company swung to a Q1 loss and reported lower year-over-year revenue.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was marginally advancing, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was 0.4% higher. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was 0.4% up, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) was flat. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was flat.

Tencent Music Entertainment Group ( TME ) shares traded up 1.6% pre-bell after the company reported Q1 earnings of 1.09 renminbi ($0.15) per diluted American depositary share, up from 0.89 renminbi a year earlier.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was down by 0.1%.

Permian Resources ( PR ) shares were down 0.7% before Monday's opening bell after the company said that certain stockholders had launched a public offering of about 51.8 million of its Class A shares.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained 0.7% to $78.83 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas retreated 0.4% to $2.24 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) was up 0.8%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.6% lower.

Gold futures for June retreated 1% to $2,350.20 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures were down 0.3% to $28.42 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) fell 0.8%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 0.3% higher.
