Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Higher Pre-Bell Tuesday Ahead of Last Trading Day of 2024

08:49 AM EST, 12/31/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( SPY ) was up 0.3% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.4% in Tuesday's premarket activity, ahead of the last trading day of the year.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.3%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.2%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index and the Federal Housing Finance Agency House Price Index will be reported at 9 am ET.

The US Department of Agriculture's Farm Prices report will be released at 3 pm ET.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 0.4% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.3% lower.

Power Play:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLP ) was down 0.1%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was inactive. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF ( IYK ) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLY ) gained 0.3%. The VanEck Retail ETF ( RTH ) and the SPDR S&P Retail ETF ( XRT ) were inactive.

The Real Good Food ( RGF ) shares were down 22% pre-bell after the company said late Monday its board has approved a 12-for-1 reverse split of its Class A common shares and Class B common shares, effective at 5 pm ET on Jan. 3, in an effort to regain compliance with Nasdaq's minimum bid price requirement.

Winners and Losers:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) was flat while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund ( VIS ) and the iShares US Industrials ETF ( IYJ ) were inactive.

EHang Holdings ( EH ) stock was up more than 7% before the opening bell after the company lifted its guidance for Q4 and fiscal 2024 revenue.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.5%, and the iShares US Technology ETF ( IYW ) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF ( IGM ) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF ( XSD ) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.7%.

Dave ( DAVE ) shares were down more than 6% pre-bell after the US Department of Justice said Monday that the company and its Chief Executive Jason Wilk are facing a joint complaint by the department and the Federal Trade Commission for allegedly misleading consumers.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLV ) advanced 0.3%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ( VHT ) gained 0.2% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF ( IYH ) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.3%.

Waystar Holding ( WAY ) stock was down more than 4% premarket after the company said late Monday it has amended its first lien credit agreement with its lenders, repricing its term loan and increasing its revolving credit facility.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares ( FAS ) was up 0.7%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares ( FAZ ) was 0.6% lower.

HomeStreet ( HMST ) shares were down more than 3% pre-bell Tuesday after the company said that its HomeStreet Bank unit closed the sale of $990 million of multi-family commercial real estate loans on a servicing retained basis.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF ( IYE ) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLE ) was up by 0.5%.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil advanced 0.6% to $71.41 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas fell 4.3% to $3.77 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund ( USO ) was up 0.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund ( UNG ) was 3.1% lower.

Gold futures for February were up 0.2% at $2,622.90 an ounce on the Comex, while silver futures retreated 0.2% to $29.35 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares ( GLD ) increased 0.1%, while the iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) was down 0.5%.
